Organic Farm

Experience life as a South African dairy farmer!

Discover South Africa while volunteering: learn about organic dairy production and support local farmers!

Organic farming in Africa - GlobalongLocated in a family farm in the Plettenberg Bay area, this programme allows you to immerse yourself in the world of organic dairy production.

Today, the main activity consists in collecting and transforming milk into cheese, yogurts, butter and even ice cream!

These organic products (as well as homemade bread) are available for the public to purchase or consume in the farm’s cafeteria.

A group of international volunteers in South Africa - GlobalongClients can also purchase plants and seeds from the farm’s plant nursery.

The natural setting of the farm offers a real break from urban life.

The dairy cattle is a 24/7 responsibility as farmers must perform many daily and year-round activities such as:

  • Insemination
  • Pregnancy checking
  • Calving
  • Volunteer at a dairy catttle farm - GlobalongWeaning
  • Feeding
  • Milking (early mornings and afternoons)

International volunteers can take part in a variety of daily tasks at the organic farm while learning new skills.

Farm work is hard work, but it is very rewarding as you may learn many useful things while volunteering!

As a volunteer, you may be requested to take part in the following tasks:

  • Support local farmers by volunteering - GlobalongWater resource management issues
  • Pasture management: growing and harvesting
  • Supplementary feeding of cattle
  • Veterinary care
  • Fencing and paddock maintenance
  • Weeding and general maintenance

Volunteers can also help at the farm’s plant nursery with:

  • Composting
  • Sowing
  • Potting
  • Agricultural volunteering in South Africa - GlobalongFertilising plants, flowers, fruit and vegetables

Work at the plant nursery is seasonal however there is always something to do – during quieter seasons, the soil needs to be prepared for the next crop!

Throughout your volunteering mission, you will perform manual activities and the local team will be by your side to teach you new methods.

As a volunteer, you will prepare and facilitate fruit and vegetable gardening workshops for members of the local community on your project site. Eco-volunteering at a South African farm - GlobalongYou could also facilitate workshops in Kurland, a historically disadvantaged village.
