Volunteer and bring awareness on animal rights - GlobalongTake part in a volunteering programme at an animal shelter and help improve the living conditions of many pets around Cape Town, South Africa!

This shelter is a non-profit organisation whose mission is to rescue and rehabilitate lost, abandoned, abused, and neglected animals, in order for them to find forever homes.

The organisation’s main tasks include:

  • Helping families from disadvantaged backgrounds sterilise their pets, in order to reduce the number of homeless animals
  • Volunteers rescueing a stray dog - GlobalongHelping the local community prevent the suffering of animals by providing care and treatment to abandoned, injured or neglected pets (vaccinations, deworming, parasite control)
  • Feeding the animals
  • Providing advice on how to positively educate pets 
  • Setting up a mobile clinic

Members of this NGO also take part in awareness campaigns, educating local communities, especially children, about our moral and ethical responsibility towards animal protection in order to promote animal rights.

Children and volunteers care for stray dogs - GlobalongHere is a (non exhaustive) description of a typical day at the shelter:

  • 8am – 10am : Assisting the staff, helping the team feed, care for and medicate the animals, cleaning the kennels
  • 10am – 12pm : Walking the dogs (on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays), taking some of them to hydrotherapy sessions. You may walk the dogs on beautiful beaches in Cape Town on Fridays and Saturdays.
  • 12pm : Feeding the puppies
  • 13h – 15h30 : Walking and socializing the dogs, playing with the animals, grooming them, cleaning their toys etc.
  • Support the local shelter team - Globalong3.30pm : Feeding the cats and the dogs
  • 4pm : Checking that all kennels are clean and dry, that blankets and water are available
  • 4.30pm : Ending the day's mission,
    once all tasks have been accomplished.

On Fridays, volunteers may assist the staff with the deworming and weighing of the puppies.

The shelter staff encourages all volunteers to interact with the animals, to give them affection and play with them between each task!

Local children and volunteers support animal rights - GlobalongDaily tasks may vary according to the volunteer’s profile, the season and current needs.

You may also assist the mobile clinic team to bring awareness to the locals about animal rights.

If you have veterinary training, you may help treat animals. Please let us know when registering!

Accommodation:

You will be staying in a shared room at a backpackers’
A kitchen, a lounge and dining area, shared bathrooms, outdoors and indoors chill areas are available. 

The accommodation is right next to the beach!

Internship with animals - Globalong

While bedding is provided to volunteers, you will have to bring your own towels.

You may use commercial laundry facilities in the area.

Meals:

Breakfast and dinner will be provided from Monday to Friday.  

On Saturdays and Sundays, self-service can be provided for additional cost.

If you have a particular diet or food allergies, please let us know by mail at info@globalong.com and please inform your programme coordinator as well upon arrival in South Africa. 

Recommendations:

Please bring comfortable, practical clothes as well as a small bag where you are advised to keep your valuables.

You can purchase anything else you may need from a local supermarket.

Volunteers help rescue stray cats - GlobalongPlease note that the use of mobile phones is not permitted at the shelter for safety reasons, so that volunteers working with animals are focused on their tasks.
