Cambodia is one of the poorest countries in Asia and a large part of the population lives below the poverty line with less than one US dollar per day.
You can start on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month. You will be picked-up the day before at the Phnom Penh International Airport and driven directly to your accommodation where you will spend the introduction days with other volunteers.
For your voluntary work period, you will stay either with a host family, or in a guesthouse. You could have to share bedrooms/bathroom with one or more other volunteers. Accommodations always include a fan and a single bed per person. Living with a host family or in a local guesthouse is the best way to discover a country from the inside.
In order to minimize the culture shock, we organise on the first Monday and Tuesday a few hours of basic Cambodian language and vocabulary classes and introduce you to the local culture’s dos and don’ts, to avoid classic tourist blunders. This also allows you to be prepared for your mission.
You will, get full details about your volunteer mission, accommodation, living conditions, climate, Buddhist life style and any other useful information. Your coordinator will remain at your disposal for any questions.
During the intro-days, you can make the most of your afternoon by discovering Phnom Penh and its surroundings and you will take part in a guided city tour.
The local team will do their best to ease and quicken your integration.
Please note that, participants are of different nationalities and in order to ensure your perfect integration, we ask you to be aware of cultural differences, please remain respectful and understanding in your behaviour as well as in your way of dressing.
If you decide to take part in our volunteering program in Cambodia, you will receive a comprehensive guide to the country and the mission with some good advice and useful information.
Programmes in Cambodia:
You can choose between programs in different areas; orphanages, education, human rights, sustainable development, health care, environment and architecture. Most of the missions can be validated as internships.
Meals and Accommodation in Cambodia:
During the intro-days, you will be accommodated in a guesthouse run by the local organisation. You will share a western-style bedroom, with other participants. Only volunteers staying for more than six months can have a single room.
After this period, you will either stay in the guesthouse, or you will be housed on project site. (Refer to each program details for more information).
You will get three meals per day, mostly traditional Cambodian dishes. Meals are mainly composed of rice, vegetables and/or meat.
Vegetarians could have to prepare meals by themselves.
Living standards in Cambodia are very low compared to Western ones, and it is important to realise that you will live in the same conditions as local people. Do not expect any kind of luxury.
The coordinator and his team will help you all along your stay.
