The country of Gandhi, the Taj Mahal and tasteful spices, all your senses will come to life and a simple task will become a wonderful experience!
Become a volunteer in North India and help one of the poorest population in the world.
To repeat a cliché: one cannot imagine what India is like before going there.
In order to avoid a culture choc, the first week is an introduction to learn more about indian habits, the language, transports, security etc.
Florent shares his experience in India:
Delhi is mix of tradition and modernity and has about 13 million inhabitants. Old Delhi is the ancient part of the city centre where you can wander in bazaars and busy tiny streets. New Delhi, to the north, is a modern city with large boulevards, sky-scrapers and official buildings.
To give you an idea of the mad traffic in India, watch this video.
Jaipur, also called the pink city, is the capital of Rajastan. The buildings were painted pink to honor Prince Albert of England in 1953. The countryside around the city has a unique beauty.
In the centre, you will find the architectural marvel Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) and an astronomical observatory. The best time to visit this region is from October to March.
Dharamsala is situated in North India, in the Himachal Pradesh region. This is where the Dalaï Lama and the exiled government of Tibet have found refuge. Join our volunteers in Dharamsala and discover this city full of spirituality. Take a look of a video of Dharamsala
The city is also located in Himachal Pradesh’s region, surrounded by tea plantation and pine forests. It is a picturesque town between plains and mountains, where possibilities for trekking are numerous.
Are you over 18 ? Are you motivated and looking for new horizons? This destination is for you!
The first week will be devoted to the discovery of the country and its culture. You will also be given important information about your volunteer program, your accommodation and your living conditions.
The coordinator remains available in case of doubts or questions.
You will participate in field trips to the city to see amongst other things: the marketplace, Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India, and Rajghat; where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated in 1948.
If you choose to participate in the volunteer program in India, you will receive a comprehensive guide to the country and mission, before you start. This will include tips and important useful information.
Some of our programs are based in the centre of Delhi, but the majority are located outside the city, so that children can grow up in areas, which are less affected by pollution. You will have 3 meals per day. Breakfast usually consists of bread and tea, lunch and dinner of rice, lentil soup, seasonal vegetable curries and sometimes meat.
During your introduction week, you will stay with other volunteers in an apartment in Delhi.
You will share a room with 2-5 other volunteers.
Accommodation then depends on the program you choose, you will either a stay with a host family or you may be living at your place of work.
Most of the time you share your room with another volunteer. The majority of accommodations have electricity, but are subject to power cuts.
Housing and toilets are basic but well maintained.
Expect local living conditions.
Most host families are used to receive foreign volunteers and usually one or more family members speak English.
Note that for some programs, you may be asked to use public transport to get there. Travel costs are your responsibility, but remain small (usually less than a euro a day).
Initial membership fee (200 €) enrolment as a member of the GlobAlong Association is valid for a period of 9 years (renewable).
