International Volunteering in the USA with GlobAlong!

Experience ranch life while volunteering in the USA

Take part in a horse training programme or in an equine and animal therapy programme on a Mississippi ranch!

Volunteer on an American ranch - GlobAlongIf you are a horse lover and a horse riding enthusiast, then this programme is perfect for you!

Experience a unique volunteering opportunity in the American South: you could either help train Paso Fino horses or support children with a handicap taking part in an equine and animal therapy programme.

This programme is set in a 200 acre ranch (80 hectares) in the South of Mississippi, specialising in horse breeding and training for five generations!

At the heart of an 800 acre estate (320 hectares) - ideal for trail riding and hiking - this ranch is home to many animals including about 80 horses, cats, dogs, goats and other animals.

This volunteering mission will allow you to spend most of your day with horses.

Horse training programme:

Volunteers taking part in the horse training programme may take part in the following tasks:

  • Volunteers in Mississippi - GlobAlongHorse grooming
  • Horse feeding
  • Horse care
  • Assisting in horse training
  • Ranch maintenance (stall cleaning, fence maintenance, gardening, etc.)

Equine and animal therapy programme for children with a handicap:

Make a difference in the lives of American children with a handicap by sharing your love of horses with them!

Equine and animal therapy are offered for free to any child with autism or other handicaps so that all children in need of therapy can make the most of this opportunity, regardless of their background.

Children visit the ranch to be in contact with horses and other animals (cats, dogs, goats) or to ride horses under the supervision of trained instructors.

Equine therapy in the USA - GlobAlongMany studies have confirmed the effectiveness of therapies such as equine and animal therapy for people with a handicap, especially children.
Families have noticed great progress with their children’s cognitive and social skills.
Many children and families taking part in the programme have described their time on the ranch as “the highlight” of their week, something that they “really look forward to”.

Your role as a volunteer in the equine and animal therapy programmes:

You will look after the animals who take part in the equine and animal therapy programmes (horses, cats, dogs, goats):

  • Feeding the animals
  • Cats from the animal therapy programme - GlobAlongCaring for the animals

  • Helping the children with balance
  • Etc.

If you have photography or communication skills (blog and social media update), you could also offer your expertise to help develop this equine and animal therapy programme in Mississippi!

A child and her mount - GlobAlong

This picturesque ranch is located on the hills of a beautiful region of the American South, in Mississippi – only 30 minutes away from the Gulf of Mexico and about an hour away from New Orleans, Louisiana.

Your local coordinator will help you organise a tour of this vibrant city!
You will hear talented jazz musicians when walking across the French quarter.
You could cruise the Mississippi river on a paddlewheel boat.

You will also discover Cajun gastronomy and taste traditional dishes such as po-boy, jambalaya or gumbo! A mix between French, Spanish and Caribbean gastronomies, Cajun cuisine is sea food and rice-based and well-seasoned. There’s nothing like it!

You will stay in a newly renovated house.
You will share a room (same-sex rooms), a bathroom and kitchen with fellow volunteers.
Volunteers' cabin in Mississippi - GlobAlongWIFI is available.

You will be able to do your laundry on site (you will have to purchase your washing powder: $10/gallon = /3.7 litres).

You will make your own breakfast.
Lunch and dinner will be prepared by volunteers and ranch staff in turn and shared in a friendly atmosphere.

This will be a great opportunity for you to learn how to cook traditional local dishes!
