Bangalore:

Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka state, is also called "Garden City" because of its many parks, lakes and boulevards in the city centre. Here we have the cradle of technology and with its contribution to the new Indian economy, it is the most progressive city in the country. In the city centre there are several laboratories for natural and industrial research.

Everywhere you can see fast food outlets, hippy bars and nightclubs for the Indian jet set. The architecture is an amazing mix of modern buildings and old ruins.

Volunteer in South India GlobalongAs in all major Indian cities, the initial impression is of rubbish decay and chaos, but it is also a centre for modern business and computer science students and home to more than six million people in the slums.

The state of Karnataka:

is a contrast to its capital Bangalore. On the one hand we have modern, technological progress, computers and a new economy. On the other, we have ancestral landscapes, majestic forests, huge waterfalls and protected nature reserves. In Karnataka, religion is extremely important for the people and you can discover countless temples.

Hampi and Pattadakal are two sites listed as World Heritage by UNESCO and worth visiting.

The state of Tamil Nadu:

Tamil Nadu is one of the richest and most urbanized states of India. Demography is more stable and population density is less of an issue.

The capital is called Madras/Chennai and has more than 4 million inhabitants. Here there has been far less influence from other religions and Tamil Nadu is a very Hindu state. You will find sandy beaches, and a surprising culture and architecture.

The state of Andhra Pradesh:

The capital is called Hyderabad, and the official language is Telugu. This language has inspired many artists, and the state has become a mecca for culture, both music and art. There are many museums and some of the best Indian universities.

The volunteer programme in South India !

So that the culture shock is not too great we run an intro-course of cultural immersion during between 1 and 10 days depending on the total length of your stay. This will include basic vocabulary and an introduction to the culture so that you will avoid making any faux pas.

You can also try your hand at yoga and meditation. You will also be informed about your volunteer mission, accommodation, living conditions and other important information. The coordinator remains available in case of doubts or questions. If you choose to participate in the volunteer programme in South India, you will receive a comprehensive guide to the area with useful advice and information.

Most host families are used to receive foreign volunteers, and usually at least one family member speaks English. The projects are located around Bangalore, or a little further out, in the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
