Volunteer in orphanages of Tanzania

Give your time in Tanzania for a life changing-experience !

Like the rest of sub-Saharan Africa, Tanzania is a victim of poverty and the AIDS / HIV virus. The number of orphans and abandoned children in the streets is increasing every year.

Some local organizations are doing everything possible to protect these children and offer to provide them with training and education.

Some of these children are not orphans but have fled poverty, disease, AIDS / HIV, and despair from their villages to seek a better future in big cities like Dar es Salaam, Arusha or Moshi.

Unfortunately life on the streets is very difficult and the conditions are deteriorating. Most orphanages in Tanzania have few resources and staff. Some of these orphanages are so poor they struggle every day to feed the children.

Unfortunately they cannot help everyone; they simply cannot afford the school uniforms and books.

Other orphanages have their own schools and more resources.

What is common to all is the fact that they rely on volunteers and donations to survive and provide a safe daily life for the children. The orphanages are near Arusha.

Some of them are located in the countryside and volunteers must take the local minibus called the "Dalla Dallas," which cost about 5 dollars a day to get there.

Some orphanages have created vegetable gardens to meet the nutritional needs of these children at a lower cost; they grow fruit and vegetables and also raise cows, chickens and goats.

Part of the harvest is sold on the market and brings an additional source of income for orphanages.

If you have green fingers, you can help maintain the garden and plant new plants.

The tasks depend on each orphanage and daily needs, for example:

  • Helping to prepare breakfast and take the children to school. There is always someone who goes to collect the children so they do not come home alone.
  • Teaching English for 3-4 hours per day at the orphanage or school
  • Organizing activities for the children when they come home from school
  • children Globalong volunteering Helping with homework

  • Helping with washing, going to the toilet, brushing teeth and learning the rules of hygiene with the children

  • And many more according to your interests and qualifications, please feel free to bring in new ideas and take the initiative
  • Children between 2 and 6 years remain in the phanage and volunteers who do not teach organize games, play football or other activities

During the day, most older orphans go to school. Meanwhile, you could help the staff with the daily tasks, take care of the younger children or help teachers during class.
